Clinical Study of Spontaneous Pneumothorax

Abstract

|
Forty-five cases of spontaneous pneumothorax encountered in Sung-Sim hospital during the period from 1976 to 1982 were reviewed.
The incidence was highest in the adult between 21 and 49 years of age, showing 77%. - Two cases of bilateral spontaneous pneumothorax (4.4%) were noted. Pulmonary tuberculosis was the most common cause, 55% of the case. Non-tuberculosis group was 20 cases (45%), of which 13 cases were idiopathic, 2 emphysematous bullae or blebs, 3 inflammatory disease (pneumonia) and two pulmonary paragonimiasis.
Among 45 cases, the lung was expanded completely with bed rest in 4 cases, in 47 cases with closed thoracotomy and under-water seal drainage connecting to negative suction and 4 cases were treated with open thoracotomy.
